It’s not all ICT & EduTech for me!

Here is an overview of the various adventures we’ve undertaken recently. They are in descending order of most recent to oldest. You can click on each one for a more detailed summary.

Hurunui Heartland Ride – October 2023

The mythical ‘long weekend bikepacking trip’ doesn’t need to have huge amounts of planning – Labour Day Weekend 2023 provided the ultimate opportunity to hit the road and see what happens… You can read more here.

Redundancy Ride + Alps 2 Ocean – May 2023

This was a 10 day adventure starting from home in Christchurch and meandering my way south to Lake Tekapo, before joining the Alps 2 Ocean route and finishing in Oamaru. I completed this during a break from work between jobs and it was some of the best bikepacking I’ve enjoyed. You can read more here.

West Coast Wilderness Trail – February 2023

A lot can be accomplished in 37hrs when you put your mind to it, and so with two co-conspirators we drove to the West Coast and rode the 134km of the Wilderness Trail. Blessed with awesome weather, it was a wonderful break away from the routines of daily life and you can read about it here.

Tour Aotearoa: 6 Days 5 Nights In Lower North Island – December 2022

My first truly multi-day bikepacking trip following the Tour Aotearoa trail in reverse from Wellington to Levin. 590km ridden and over 5000m elevation later, it was a great trip you can read about here.

24hr Bikepacking Adventure – November 2022

The inaugural overnight bikepacking adventure for me, touching in at just over 24hrs in total, nearly 150km ridden and a whole heap of fun had – read and see more here.

Christchurch 360 Trail – Summer 2021-22

This will be progressively updated as I complete the 8 segments of this Trail. Currently, I’ve done the first two and hope to complete the remaining six this summer – read and see more here.

Foggy Peak & Castle Hill Peak – April 2021

A quick day hike in the Porters Pass region to the top of Foggy Peak and mostly up Castle Hill Peak before calling it quits for the day. Definitely worth checking out if you’re in the region – read more about it here.

Waitangi Weekend eBike Wandering – February 2021

After a few range testing rides, it was ready for the real deal: an overnight camping trip on the Riese and Muller Supercharger 2 and I had a great time doing it (despite some range axiety on day two!) read all about it here!

Peak Hill Hike – October 2020

With COVID19 restrictions lifting and the school holidays upon us, Imogen and I decided to hike up Peak Hill and camp the night there. Despite being windier that we might have liked it still proved a great adventure. Read the rest here.

eBike Touring in Tekapo – July 2020

A chance to do some testing of the range of my new eBike and plan some touring around the beautiful MacKenzie Country. Read all about it detail here, but suffice to say it was an epic few rides and has definitely got me wanting to go back for more!

Tekapo Twin Hikes,  Mackenzie Basin – June 2020

With lockdown levels associated with COVID19 reducing, I took the opportunity to head to Lake Tekapo with my wife to celebrate 19yrs of marriage. We completed two easy hikes during this trip: the Hooker Valley Track and Mt John Observatory Summit Track. Check out the trip details here.

Tarn Hut, North Canterbury – March 2020.

This hike was a chance to extend the legs on longer sections with more elevation, so I took my colleague Tim along for the adventure. It definitely delivered on both counts, with some punishing uphill climbs rewarded with stunning views of the alpine Tarn. You can read all the details here.

Woolshed Hut Creek, Hakatere – February 2020.

A hike “of two halves”, with the weather on the walk in to the Woolshed Hike just miserably cold and wet, however day two proved to be an absolute postcard with incredible views and wide ranging scenery. Check out the hike recap here.

Sign of the Packhorse, Canterbury – February 2020.

Showing once again how much fun you can squeeze into less than 24hrs, Niamh and I tackled the Sign of the Packhorse, departing in the early evening of Friday and home before midday on Saturday. Click here to read the recap of the hike.

Bealey Spur, Arthur’s Pass – February 2020.

A quick overnight hike with Evangeline – click here to read the recap of the hike. It was a great first time out with a bunch of new gear and we had awesome weather and the bonus of seeing some of the action racing from the Coast to Coast Adventure Race.
